Path to passive design: multifamily lessons learned

Passive building activity has increased exponentially in recent years—from single family residential projects to multifamily, and now the trend is moving towards commercial buildings. This presentation takes a look at several low and midrise multifamily projects across the country that were constructed at 0-5% additional cost over an EnergyStar baseline. Successful construction techniques and lessons learned will be discussed.

Following the technical training, there will be a panel of speakers that will share a case study of Madison’s landmark affordable housing multifamily project, Rethke Terrace. This project reached Passive House and LEED Platinum certification earlier this year. It became the first multifamily project in Madison (and the Midwest!) to reach this rigorous sustainable design goal. Attendees are also invited to join the developer and the design team for a tour of Rethke Terrace on Madison’s east side.

Who should attend? Architects, engineers, contractors, building owners, developers, builders and anyone with interest in designing and constructing high-performance residential, multifamily and commercial buildings.

As a result of this course, you will be able to:

  • Describe passive building standard construction approaches including detailing techniques
  • Discuss various enclosure techniques that were successfully used in multifamily passive buildings to meet the project’s economic goals
  • Explain passive house building standards to successfully design low and midrise buildings
  • Discuss how passive house can be utilized in low-income housing developments for the welfare of owners and tenants
  • Discover how to make informed decisions to reduce energy in a cost effective way

Katrin Klingenberg, Executive Director, Passive House Institute US | PHIUS

Katrin is the Executive Director of the Passive House Institute U.S. (PHIUS), an organization committed to making high-performance passive building the mainstream market standard. Katrin began her career in architecture with Murphy/Jahn and Solomon Cordwell Buenz in Chicago, Illinois. In 2002, she started her own firm and became a registered architect in Germany and in 2007, Katrin co-founded the Passive House Institute US to work on education. She is the lead instructor for the PHIUS Certified Passive House Consultant training and directs the technical and research programs at PHIUS, which has trained more than 3,000 architects, engineers, energy consultants, energy raters, and builders in passive building standards. PHIUS has become the leading passive building research and information provider in North America.

James Lewis RA, CPHC, Development Director, Pinnacle Construction Group, INC

James is the Director of Real Estate Development for Pinnacle Construction Group, a full-service development, construction and management company in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He is also a licensed architect and certified Passive House consultant. James is passionate about creating value for his clients through design innovation and pragmatic management practices. He has demonstrated that it is possible to build healthy, efficient buildings while maintaining a market-based budget. He managed the design and construction team for the first certified PHIUS+ multifamily development in the Midwest, Heartland Housing’s Rethke Terrace, a 60-unit supportive housing development in Madison, WI. He has adapted this Passive House model for future developments, including the recently opened Tree Lane Apartments, a 45-unit family supportive housing development also in Madison. A relentless innovator and craftsman, he is constantly pushing for better designs, materials, methods, and financing structures to create delightful places for people.

Mike Zuehlke AIA, Senior Associate, Engberg Anderson Architects

Over the course of his career, Mike has developed a wide range of experience in several markets including, higher education, libraries, community centers and housing. Mike’s notable project experience includes the University of Wisconsin, Hillel Barbara Hochberg Center for Jewish Student life, Madison Public Library’s Meadowridge Library and Meadowood Neighborhood Center and Sequoya Library, the Madison Midtown Police Station and the Madison Homeless Housing project with Heartland Housing, Inc. Mike holds undergraduate and graduate degrees in Architecture from the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee.

Lindsey Elton HERS Rater, BPI BA/BE Specialist, ENERGY STAR v3, LEED Green Rater, PHIUS+ Rater, President / Director of Rating Services, Eco Achievers

Lindsey helps project teams throughout the Midwest build third-party verified green homes that meet everything from LEED to Passive House standards. Lindsey is certified in advanced building science and building diagnostic testing. She started her career with the Chicago Green Homes Program, then moved to the HEET Weatherization Program, which provided workforce training and weatherization improvements to lower-income homes throughout Chicago. Lindsey currently oversees Eco Achievers’ field testing and inspections, providing hands on problem solving and building analysis. She also works with commercial clients on wall assembly commissioning and infiltration performance testing. Lindsey volunteers as Vice President of the Passive House Alliance of Chicago and frequently speaks on topics related to LEED, Passive House, and building science.
