3.3 Building Monitoring, Data Analysis and Troubleshooting
This is course 3.3 of the Energy Modeling, Intelligent Building Operation, and Advanced Energy Performance module.
Building automation systems (BAS) are utilized in many buildings for controlling and monitoring the HVAC systems of the facility. The BAS provides a wealth of real-time information to the building operator about these systems.
If utilized appropriately, the BAS can be viewed prior to physically going to investigate an issue. Oftentimes, the BAS alone has the answers to solving the issue at hand. If not, it can be utilized to narrow in on what needs to be looked at prior to sending a physical person to investigate. This course will explain how to utilize the BAS in this manner.
There are instances when a snapshot in time does not provide enough information to understand what is really happening with the system. All that real-time data (temperature, pressures, setpoints, damper commands, etc.) can be recorded, however. These trend-logs can then provide a window into the past to help in diagnosing the root cause of the issue that has been encountered. Trend-logs can also be used to right-size equipment, benchmark energy consumption, identify energy conservation opportunities and perform a host of other activities. This lesson will help identify the opportunities trended information provides.
